In the New Testament it generally went something like this:

1) You hear the "Good News."
2) You believe
3) You repent (turn from your sin).
4) You are baptized
5) The Holy Spirit takes up residence inside you.
6) You bear spiritual fruit.

The step that we have trouble with is the same step that the Israelites of the Old Testament had trouble with... #3.

The Jews of the O.T. were always worshipping foreign idols... Probably because they involved fertility rites, and sexual immorality. Just like today, people sought out the old "skin game." Some were physically involved in this, and others just sat back and watched.

We are the Rich of the world and we can afford all sorts of idols. We can afford to worship the god of materialism and its idols of jewelry, clothing, cars, homes, and other possessions. We can afford televisions which allow us to vicariously worship the god of fame and celebrity on something as benign as American Idol. We can also sit back, grab the remote, and worship the god of sexual immorality in drama and comedy... From a distance.

That may be why Jesus said it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for us, the rich, to enter heaven.

And that statement may be why we hear so many sermons today about God's Grace. Rich people don't want to hear about God's Judgement and about how He will not be mocked.

It's that pesky #3.

Still, if we do repent... Put away our idols... And actively seek to change direction... Actively seek first the kingdom of God... Then God's Grace prompts His sweet forgetting of all those times we fail... In spite of our desire and efforts to obey.

That's the good news.

Turning 53

It seems like only yesterday that I was bummed-out about turning 50. Birthdays always make me take stock of my life and once again I'm reminded that my life has turned out nothing like I expected. I like being me and I'd trade with no one, but there are some key elements missing in my past and present whose absence I regret. But the bed in which I lie is of my own design and I've been constructing it for many years.

Perhaps the best thing about being a Christian is that while we pay for our mistakes, we pay only in this life.

The course of a life pivots on both split-second decisions and time-worn habits. But my life's destination was determined on a Thursday night back in the fall of 1963, when I walked down an aisle and repeated Peter's good confession to an old preacher named Mr. Grubb. A few minutes later Mr. Grubb's gnarled old hands lowered me into the waters of the Jerome Christian Church baptistry. But I believe another pair of Hands helped lift me up. And through every triumph, every bad decision, every good deed, and every thoughtless act, those Hands have never let go of me.

I'll sing to you Lord, a hymn of love,
For your faithfulness to me.
I'm carried in Everlasting Arms,
You've never let me go, through it all.

One Place

This is a post that you might want to link to and pass along.

Most every night I wind down by playing Freecell, Hearts... sometimes a little Solitaire... while listening to something that really settles me down and gets me ready to get a good night's sleep.

Throughout the day, Moody Radio out of Chicago has many 15-25 minute Bible lessons and sermons from some of the best teachers and preachers in the country. And now, through the internet, you can listen to any of these guys - anytime you want.

It's great! One of my favorites is a guy named Tony Evans. He really hits the basics, and hits them well. You'll find him here:
http://www.oneplace.com/ministries/The_Alternative_View/

Another is Walk in the Word with James MacDonald.
http://www.oneplace.com/ministries/Walk_in_the_Word/

If you want your mind stretched a bit - and you're up to it - try Ravi Zachariah and "Let My People Think."
http://www.oneplace.com/ministries/Let_My_People_Think/

Erwin Lutzer always has a good point to make, and you can listen to the hour of the Moody Church service:
http://www.oneplace.com/ministries/Moody_Church_Hour/
... or his daily lesson:
http://www.oneplace.com/ministries/Running_To_Win/

Dr. David Jeremiah is also one of my favorites:
http://www.oneplace.com/ministries/Turning_Point/

You can even introduce your children to old time radio drama with Focus on the Family's Adventures in Odyssey and Adventures in Odyssey Weekend:
http://www.oneplace.com/ministries/Adventures_in_Odyssey/
and
http://www.oneplace.com/ministries/Adventures_in_Odyssey_Weekend/

But you definitely want to bookmark into your "favorites" the entire list of Moody Radio's offerings here:
http://www.oneplace.com/ministries/

Give it a try and enjoy.

Will Radical Islam Be Our Cross?

And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. Matthew 26:39 KJV

A great many Christians in this country start their day on their knees praying a similar prayer concerning Radical Islam. They see what is happening in Europe and they consider the worldwide birth rates among Muslims - and they wonder just what could stem the oncoming inevitability. They cling to the notion that America is blessed by God and that this Christian Nation would never be forsaken by the Almighty. After all, the Christians in this country support Christian Missions throughout the world and are surely the last hope for the message of Christ. They feel entitled to the freedom to worship and the comfortable lifestyle they have come to take for granted.

It's pretty to think that we are immune from persecution because of our token monetary and personal expenditures towards the Kingdom, but I believe certain facts dowse such confidences.

How many babies has America aborted? Has this rich country instilled sufficient materialism to poison its future, to taint what's left of its values - producing a culture bereft of decency and moral resolve?

And the Church? Moody Radio estimates that 50% of American males and 20% of the females in the Church are addicted to pornography on the internet and via other sources.

Is it indicative of our lukewarm faith that most American church-goers are better equipped intellectually to quote Seinfeld episodes than scripture? And what percentage of the world's richest Christians actually tithe?

Even if we believe that God awards protection to faithful countries and peoples - we hardly rate His intervention.

I believe that God will mold and structure worldwide events in such a way that will bring glory to Him. In the spiritual realm, the Principalities of Good and Darkness pay attention to more salient realities than our little sense of justice - our perceived notion of entitlement - and glean more spiritual gravitas from a persecuted huddling of believers in Iran, or a tormented Christian in China, than all the comfortable praise elicited for 60 minutes every week in American Churches.

The "blood of the martyrs" has always been the essence, the nourishment of Faith and Evangelism - sustaining a God-Ordained movement that transcends cultures and countries. Rich and distracted American Christians might be wise to consider how their spiritual pittance weighs against a greater Glory that might weigh upon their future.

Radical Islam may be our Cross - that which separates "the sheep from the goats" and distinguishes the Holy Vestiges from the Lukewarm Enclaves of traditionalist sopophiles. We may pray that this cup passes, but that may not be the plan.

"Embracing the Cross" may become for the American Church a more defining and unpleasant exercise than the ritual mumblings of a spoiled and forgetful flock.

Vote

O God, do not keep silent;
be not quiet, O God, be not still.
See how your enemies are astir,
how your foes rear their heads.
With cunning they conspire against your people;
they plot against those you cherish.
"Come," they say, "let us destroy them as a nation,
that the name of Israel be remembered no more.
"With one mind they plot together;
they form an alliance against you-

Make them like tumbleweed, O my God,
like chaff before the wind.

Psalm 83:1-5,13

Vote.

Contentment

I believe that God has given even the least among us those things they need to have "a life" that is independent of wealth, relationships, and experience. How often have we heard of the poor frightened soul on his deathbed who in a torrent of regret realizes the most horrible of all realities - that he is about to die... and he has never really lived.

What nonsense. The richest, most famous and celebrated human beings on the planet already have, or will, pass through the same portal as I will, possessionless and anxious, into our Maker's presence. At the point of entering eternity, having known the extravagances of travel, great possessions, relationships, and fame will pass with the same notoriety as yesterday's cup of coffee.

I've come to believe that there are really only two experiences in life... Our faith, and the distractions from our faith. Could it be that the poorest among us is he who can afford the most distractions? Is an hour spent on your knees in prayer a less monumental experience - or less real - than a Caribbean cruise or a trip to Hawaii? If a man walks with God, is he alone if he has no wife or family? If a child dies, has he really missed anything as he is gathered into the arms of Jesus at Heaven's gate?

Christianity allows a rapidly aging, untravelled, childless, and unloved old bachelor such as me an amazing freedom from regret, as I bathe in the contentment of knowing that this life is not the party, and that every disappointment and pain is a garment for my soul as it is readied for its trip home.

I believe that developing a spiritual life, a connection with the real world, is key to contentment. It is like developing a new consciousness, and a process that is only impeded by the craving for, and possession of, material things. If we spend our lives chasing the next possession... the next experience, comfort, relationship, or pleasure... we miss our portion, our God-given blessings that have nothing in common with the little illusions we so desperately build around us, seeking to grasp control of something of which we can never have control. Life was meant to be lived, but its fullest expressions are available to the timid as well as the bold, the plain as well as the pretty, and the poor as well as the rich. The best of life can take root in the poorest soil. It can blossom in the most unlikely heart.

In a few minutes I will go out and squat in my garden and pull weeds from my carrots. I will listen to songs of praise on my Walkman tuned to Moody radio. There will be a breeze on my face and the sun on my bare back. It may not be as good as Disneyworld. But I will be content.

The 21st Century Jesus

Speaking for Jesus politically is difficult because it is darn near impossible to get an interview with the Savior to get His opinion on the hot topics of the day... though certain tele-evangelists claim to have personally bridged that little divide... and other common folk, by the humble and sacrificial lives they lead, seem like they just might be privy to a sacred one-on-one. I fall into neither of these categories, but since I have an opinion about most everything... I will foolishly speak for the Almighty, and suggest how He might live as a Jewish American... if he came back as a man to dwell among us for a while.

Jesus knows that the physical universe (as opposed to what we'll call the real world) has a life span, and he knows exactly when this temporary world will die. He knows the Earth was created perfectly adequate to it's purpose. So I can't see him as an environmentalist, although since He welcomes praise for the beauty and magnificence of the Earth, He would never litter or erect a billboard.

Jesus wouldn't be in favor of hiring a homosexual as a teacher or a scoutmaster because He would want to protect His little ones from the influence of evil... and, he would want to protect the homosexual, that He loves, from the damning effects of that influence. And he wouldn't hire a promiscuous heterosexual for the exact same reason.

He would take a weekend and drive to Virginia and have a long talk with Pat Robertson, and then give him a big hug.

He would favor lower taxes because it would mean He would have more money to do good things and help the poor. He would pray for, and witness to... the lazy, as He allowed them to flounder and fail. But there would be no poor widow or disabled person in His neighborhood that would go without His help.

Jesus wouldn't talk on a cell phone while driving.

He would see the open border with Mexico as an invitation for law-breaking and so He would support the building of a fence. When an illegal crossed His path He would help him in any legal way that He could, and terms like wet-back and towel-head would not lounge in His vocabulary.

Based on what I have read in the Old and New Testaments, Jesus would hate war but support the use of power to accomplish good. He would pray for the soldiers, for a righteous outcome, and for peace.

He would spend an entire morning talking with Joni Eareckson-Tada, and then they would spend the afternoon together playing tennis.

He would be color-blind. When He filled out a form that asked for His race, He would leave that part blank... because it would annoy Him.

Jesus would hate abortion and put His money where His mouth was, supporting un-wed mothers and facilitating adoption.

He would support the death penalty, but aggressively work to save the souls of those on death row through prison ministry.

Jesus would of course support Israel and daily pray for her... and for a change in her neighbors' hearts.

Jesus would have one TV, but it would almost never be on, except in the fall when Notre Dame played football. (Maybe.)

Jesus would live humbly and He would be frugal. He would have one home and drive one vehicle, a big pick-up with a very scratched-up bed. His surplus income would be distributed between His church and charitable organizations... and He would stick a little in His retirement savings. He would rarely travel more than fifty miles from His home.

He would be single. When a pretty girl walked by, he would turn his head and think of Notre Dame football.

When He needed to relax He would go to a lake and fish, and He would be very, very good at it.

I think I know which church He would attend, but regardless... He would concentrate on those things that unite us rather than the topics which divide. He would love Church parties. He would cherish and cater to the old folk in His Church... as an example to the young.
There would always be plenty of food at His Church's picnics.

He would look a lot like Jim Caviezel and He would be the best neighbor EVER.

He would be ultra-liberal with His love, and ultra-conservative in His adherence to the truth.

You might see Him one day getting out of His truck at Home Depot. He would notice you staring at Him and He would stroll over with a big smile. He would put His hands on your shoulders and whisper, "Now I want you to stop worrying... You're mine, and I'm not letting go."

The Sin of Distraction

A Christian woman in Zimbabwe fervently prays for food to feed her hungry son. A Christian woman in Cincinnati fervently prays for guidance as to which color car to buy. A Christian man in China prays for courage to suffer persecution, while a Christian man in Denver prays for courage to face his boredom.

The main problem with being a Christian living in the United States is that we are blessed to the point of distraction. Most of us either regularly or occasionally thank God that we were born in this land... this country of the very rich, because we are genuinely grateful that we have never known hunger, need, or the point of the sword. But insulation from physical dangers, deprivations, and irritants can manifest itself in a dream-like state that leaves us detached from reality... and walking around as if our existence was about us, our creature comforts, and our little human ambitions. In the history of Christendom has there ever been a more distracted lot?

I believe that this is at least one reason why it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven. (Talk about an "Inconvenient Truth!")

Independence from the stresses of basic survival is indeed a blessing, but it is a gift that perpetuates self-reliance rather than faith, and leads to the gathering of luxuries and the laying up of retirement treasures in a world where physical needs are immediate and plentiful. We develop around us redundant financial safety systems lest a failure leaves us living below the level to which we are accustomed. Portfolio idolatry is a very seductive thing.

I tend to justify my ambitious retirement plan by reasoning that I will be able to help the Church even after I stop working... But it's really about me... It's about my financial security and my standard of living.

We need to remember that being counted among the rich is an awesome and grave responsibility... and a snare. When Jesus talked of judgment he talked of sheep and goats. The former cared for their fellow man. The latter did not.

Now I believe that we rich Christians living in the U.S. are every bit as covered by God's Grace as any persecuted, poor Christian around the world. But our responsibilities are very different. And somehow I feel the forgiving power of God's Grace assumes that, at the very least, He has our attention.

When it comes to "amounts," our time devoted to Him and our giving will be relative and diverse. But regardless of our station, I believe an active (not passive) course must be pursued in both our "seeking" and our "giving," and the latter will be a manifestation, perhaps a measure, of the former. I feel we are called to live simply and humbly so that our lives might be an example and an indication of the importance we place on this finite world as opposed to the "real" world yet to come.

But it all starts with a keen and ever-present awareness of who we are, and to Whom we belong. Our monetary wealth and our amazing wealth of leisure time are historically unique, so perhaps it is critically important to take a few moments and choose which kingdom and which world in which to invest our money, our time, and our attention. Taking stock will most likely leave you feeling very convicted and humbled... which is a very good place to start.

Good Friday in America

Everybody scattered. Everybody ran when they arrested him. What had they been thinking? Why had they wasted three years of their lives following this man who obviously, based on the day's events, was just a man. They were frightened, disillusioned, and they felt like fools.

Only John, his best friend, attended the execution. The rest were in hiding, wondering if they would be next. They had been at their best when they were with this man, and they had tried to do everything right... And this was their reward?

They were depressed and all they could see was failure and death... They certainly didn't see Sunday coming.

Today there are so many of us in this country who try to do the right thing. We give at least 10% of our income to the Church, missions, and charities in the name of the man mentioned above. We sacrifice, serve, and work to make our communities, our country, and our world the best they can be. We pray for guidance and we pray for good things. We elect a leader who prays. And what do we get?

We get depressed. The world is a mess. Everywhere we look there are seemingly insurmountable problems. The faith of our grandparents which this country once celebrated is now suspect and rejected by so many. Evil surrounds and infects us. Where is our Sugar Abba?

Job, Joni Eareckson Tada, and the rest of us were not placed on this earth to have perfect, painless lives. That is an American aberration... A rich man's folly. We were placed here to glorify God. And whether our future is bright or filled with persecution and pain, we will fulfill His purpose for our lives... It may not be what we want, but it will be glorious.

We are the Bride of Christ. And our depression is directly proportional to the extent to which we've been unfaithful and have wed ourselves to this world. Our gloom is a measure of our distraction with possessions and dreams that are ours, not His. We neglect our joy and invite sadness by habitually looking back at a burning Sodom instead of fixing our eyes on the real world, the perfect world that is our inheritance.

Sunday is coming.

Be still my soul,
The wind and waves still know His voice,
Who ruled them while He dwelt below.

Directions for the Lost

I found this post by Christina about the "lost" in our world and the direction they seek. This is the same Los Angeles whose entertainment industry tutors our teenagers, instructs our children, and babysits our toddlers.

When I was in Jr High, I accompanied my parents to a revival meeting where the preacher spoke about his home. He said that while he and his wife did not judge others, it was a struggle for him not to question the seriousness of the faith of those who had televisions in their homes. I'm sure, at the time, I desperately hoped my parents were not taking his message to heart. As a kid in the 60's our TV was my only window to what I thought was the real world, and my only balm for boredom. It was a monumental waste of time even then, but I can't remember it being disturbing.

When insomnia strikes me today I lie in bed and surf late-night cable programming where I see soft-porn videos being advertised and comedians broaching subjects that I'd be embarrassed to discuss in polite company. I see the Church belittled and adultery celebrated. I could go on, but maybe you've seen television.

Being "holier than thou" is the stuff that hypocrits are made of, but being holy is still our calling and should be our goal. Television and movies at their best are distractions from our most basic reality... that being the one relationship we have that is eternal. At their worst these entertainments are pollutants and pathogens that we willfully place between us and our Holy Creator.

Its physically impossible to turn your back to something that surrounds you. And I'll admit to being much more lost in this culture than I should be. But being cognizant of the danger is the first step towards survivng the influences of this decadent, faithless culture... and guarding our hearts by wisely choosing our entertainments is paramount in defusing its influences.

Paul wrote, "What fellowship can light have with darkness?* ...Whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable... think on these things."**

Christianity in this rich country can easily become more a "lifestyle" than a commitment. But in the early morning before the television is turned on... when our minds are yet serious and lucid... as we read the Bible and kneel to pray... there is a moment to reach past our temporary little world... and ask for wings to ride above the evil and its noise.

*2 Cor 6, **Phil 4

It Takes A Miwacle

When I was in high school there was a mentally-challenged woman at our church who wanted to sing for the morning services. She did not sing well. Nevertheless, our minister allowed her to sing once or twice per year.

I distinctly remember seeing her stand before the congregation and sing "It took a miwacle to hang the woold in space." I sat in a pew with 8 or 9 other high school boys squirming through this painful and embarrassing moment... and every one of us knew in his heart that letting this woman sing was the right thing to do.

At my present church there has been talk from the leadership that our goal is to provide the best and most appealing worship service to help bring in new converts and members. And they have succeeded in this goal because they put on a very professional and smooth service. Much can be said for being efficient and appealing to the public and I regularly pray for their success.

However the woman mentioned above would not be allowed to sing at our church. Perhaps the leadership thinks such a spectacle might cause someone to be "turned off" and not accept Jesus... to which I would remind them that it's the Gospel, not our management of it, that produces the "miracle" of a changed heart. More likely they think that someone might opt for a church that provides a better time... which would suggest that it's a business decision.

We the members of the 21st century Church do a lot of thinking... but I wonder sometimes if God isn't in Heaven saying, "Uh oh, they're thinking again..."

I would suggest that as our churches get bigger and more professional, we may be losing something important. I suppose in Bible Colleges and Seminaries they teach students how to be successful and how to "grow" a church... but I fear our church services are in danger of becoming just one more entertainment... so much like the world.

My high school church wasn't very slick... but on the Sunday that the mentally-challenged woman sang we had a message for our visitors and potential converts that was also appealing... one that spoke of our values and how we treated our family...those in our care. We displayed kindness and acceptance while sitting through this woman's tortured rendition of "It Took a Miracle"... while God tapped his foot to the rhythms of this poor woman's child-like faith.

Pat Robertson and Son

Friday morning as I lay in bed watching TV, contemplating the dreaded and monumental task of swinging my feet out onto the floor, I came upon a TBN interview with Gordon Robertson, son of the Christian Broadcasting Network's founder, Pat Robertson. Gordon was talking about his childhood and how he grew up on powdered milk and dishes his mother made with soybeans. His grandfather was a U.S. Senator, but evidently his father Pat was determined to rely on God to provide their needs. Gordon said that visiting his grandparents was like visiting another world.

It must have been a world Gordon liked because, instead of considering the ministry, he became a lawyer and practiced for ten years.

Then he went on a missionary trip to India and his life changed. According to Gordon... during a festival late at night, while he observed an old woman fervently praying to a statue, he heard a voice say to him, "No one has told her." He left the crowded festival and Jesus appeared to him and talked to him.

Whoa Duke! About here in the interview I began thinking of all the strange and embarrassing things Pat Robertson has said in the past few years. Being a believer I know that God can do anything, which includes appearing and speaking to a man... but come on!

I don't know that God is embarrassed by the Robertsons, but I know that those of us who wear the name of Christ... right underneath our cloak of worldly sophistication... are very embarrassed by these people.

And why is that? Why do I immediately tend to reject such claims? It may in part be because when I'm honest with myself I have to admit that I don't want Jesus to appear to me. I don't want a "Road to Damascus" kind of experience that Gordon Robertson claimed to have had, because Jesus might ask me to do something specific that I don't want to do... like go to Ninevah, or something. You see, I've got God under control. He gets 20 minutes every morning for Bible reading and prayer... I squeeze him in for the occasional (and very timid) witness... and ofcourse I have Him pencilled in on Sundays. The fact is, my faith more often resembles a life-style than a passion, and I wonder if that is an embarrassment to God.

Well Gordon went on to say that CBN is working at starting a "700 Club-like program" in India... in the Hindi language... that I figure could one day reach a billion people.

Now I haven't the resources to determine if God actually appears and speaks to the Robertsons. But I've decided that it would be wrong for me to criticize or even look down my nose at individuals who seek to bring the Gospel to a billion people. I don't think I was called to India... but I know I wasn't called to berate or belittle the Lord's servants.

Welcome....

Welcome!

The purpose of this site is to help 'connect & communicate' among Bible-believing Christians in Howard County.

If you know of existing networks of these pastors, leaders and other innovative Christians in the area, please let us hear from you.
